SPACES NOW AVAILABLE! Easter holiday fossil-hunting trips and workshops in the East Midlands

Would your child love the chance of a real-life fossil-hunting experience? Perhaps you would like them to have chance to learn what it takes to get into palaeontology and zoology, or simply to have a bit of extra-curricular learning, inspiration and out-of-the-ordinary fun in the school holidays? Look no further...

Zoologist, author and avid fossil-hunter Jules Howard is now offering hands on fossil-hunting activity trips for school-age children as part of his unique education service PalaeoLab and we have just secured a date for the East Midlands area in the school Easter holidays.

Where? A secret site near Peterborough! Details provided on request or upon booking.

When? Wednesday 5th April 2017. Jules will be leading two trips: one in the morning between 10 am - 12 noon and one in the afternoon between 2 pm - 4 pm. PLEASE NOTE! LIMITED SPACES! You will need to book your place!

What to expect:

  • Unique, educational and exciting opportunity to get hands-on in the field of palaeontology with a trained zoologist and international ambassador for science.

  • One-on-one training will be shared out by Jules for all children on the trip, including practical fossil hunting tips and exclusive insights into how fossils form and what they tell us about the history of life.

  • Fossil finds may include ammonite shells, belemnites, fish teeth, crocodile bones, ichthyosaur vertebrae and fossils of plants and coral. Your child will find something, guaranteed!

  • Use of equipment including geological hammers and magnifiers is provided where needed, as well as on-site access to a microscope, should this be required. (There will also be an opportunity to pond-dip for those other prehistoric giants, great crested newts!).

  • Your child will have the chance to keep all of the fossils they find. In some cases, if a fossil is particularly spectacular, children will be supported in working with natural history museums to identify and record species and their descriptions.

  • We are also pleased to be able to include a free handmade high-quality fossil hunting excavation set to take home (worth £7.99) as a thank you for coming on the trip.

  • Post-trip education tips and 360 degree virtual reality videos will be shared in an email group to parents on a regular basis to sustain and foster the children’s interest in the science and subject matter.

You will need to bring:

  • Water bottle and small snack to keep fossil-hunting energy levels going!

  • Weather appropriate kit (i.e. wet weather gear or suncream/sunhat).

  • A bag to carry fossil finds (a small backpack would be ideal to carry all of the above).

Price? £20 per child. One accompanying adult per child is welcome to go for free. (£20 for additional adult places.)

How to book: Simply email us now -- -- stating the number of places and your preferred timeslot and we will provide you with a PayPal link to fully reserve your place.

Other notes on practicalities: Parking available near site. A portaloo is available on site. Full public liability insurance (up to £1 million) is provided along with DBS certification. Children booked on the trip must be 5 years and over. All children must be accompanied by an adult (at least one adult to every 4 children). Please note that unfortunately the terrain is not suitable for wheelchair access or for pushchairs but if you would like to talk to Jules about arranging a bespoke trip suitable for wheelchair users please get in touch. In cases of bad weather, the trip may have to be rescheduled and, if not date can be found, all monies will be refunded.
